“Just like the big ones” was the event’s slogan. The newspapers on Monday, September 4, ran headlines such as: “Mini-planes are a hit,” “Mini-planes put on a show in front of 8,000 pairs of eyes” (24 heures), “Just like the big ones, huh!” (Nouvelliste).

A massive organization

It took a year and a half of work by the 10 members of the organizing committee, masterfully led by Théo Fracheboud, to put together this magnificent show.

Throughout Sunday, 98 people (members and volunteers) worked to ensure the event ran smoothly. The cafeteria team grilled 1,700 sausages and 600 slices of pork, cooked 240 kg of french fries, prepared more than 600 sandwiches, and served—to wash it all down— 2,500 beers and 5,000 non-alcoholic beverages.

The show in front of 8,000 people

Fifty pilots and just over 60 aircraft showcased our hobby to 8,000 spectators who were amazed by the demonstrations: stunning aircraft ranging from the 550-cc ME109 to the Airbus A340, including the 1:1-scale Cri-cri and the legendary Super Constellation. Helicopters, pulse-jet aircraft, aerobatic planes, and “small gliders” with wingspans of 7 or 8 meters performed to the accompaniment of smoke trails and music. The pilots came from all over Switzerland, as well as from France, Germany, and Belgium—in short, it was an international airshow.

With a Focus on Safety

The event went off without a hitch—and, most importantly, without a single crash!!! Safety was the top priority for the pilots to ensure the day went off without a hitch. It’s a shame the president of the Model Aircraft Federation didn’t make it, because he would have witnessed a spectacle unlike anything else in Switzerland. But enough talk—I’ll let you enjoy these magnificent photos. More are available on our website at www.gamaigle.ch, and a DVD will be released by the end of this year or early next year.
