The Bern Model Aircraft Club mourns the loss of its distinguished honorary member.

On July 19, 2006, one of our most loyal companions passed away after a long illness. With his almost tireless energy, Horst left an indelible mark on our club. Horst was a household name to each of us; he was simply always there.

For more than 35 years, he was always on hand whenever there was work to be done.

Our old clubhouse eventually became his second home. Bursting with energy, he kept working on the clubhouse even when the rest of us had long since given up.

He wouldn’t settle for anything less than the best. Horst set very high standards—

He was confident in himself and the other members. His model-building activities were almost frightening. Nearly every two or three weeks, you’d see him fly a new model.

Each one was bigger and faster than the last.

He was at the starting line for nearly every event near and far, equipped with the right, competitive model. Every thought and every fiber of his being was shaped by his fascination with building and flying models. This made the shock all the more devastating when his heart could no longer withstand the strains of his job and hobby.

Limits and restrictions were forcibly imposed on him.

Deeply marked by health problems, Horst was finally able to retreat into the bosom of his family. With incomparable care, his beloved Elsbeth now looked after her ailing husband.

And we, his old comrades, could do nothing else but try to cheer him up and instill confidence in him—to help him come to terms with letting go and accepting what he could no longer do.

In a rural idyll, in the garden surrounded by his animals, Horst was slowly able to find peace, perhaps even giving back to his family something that had been neglected before. On July 19, 2006, after excruciating suffering, his life came to an end. We, the model airplane enthusiasts of MG-Bern, are deeply shaken by this tragedy. We can assure his wife Elsbeth and his two sons, Roland and Marc, that we share in their grief and will honor Horst’s memory.
