GAL – Lugano Model Aircraft Club
A Success Story

Did Graziano Gemetti, a former member of GAL, know or even dream back in 1959 that his idea of water model flying, in the form of a competition, would endure for 60 years?
Back then, the first meeting was held in the Gulf of Lugano, at the Foce del Cassarate. Unfortunately, logistical problems arose in the following years, forcing the GAL to repeatedly relocate to other venues—such as Caslano, then back to the Lido of Lugano, on to Melano, and finally to Maroggia, which will hopefully remain the permanent venue.
What is astonishing is the fact that, over the years, an idea has crystallized into an event that has gained international recognition and popularity.
Thus, the Concorso Internazionale Idromodelli, the Coppa Europa F3A-I (held at intervals), and the Trofeo Marco Ferretti have become staples of the annual event, held every September. Flying takes place in the F3A-I and Semiscale Idro categories.
I don’t want to list a table of winners and countries here, but I would like to mention a few names that older modelers will surely recognize. For example, the first winner in 1959 was Paul Eggimann from Bern; Arnold Degen was on the jury at the time. From the GAL’s perspective, Jacques (2nd), Magni (4th), and Gemetti (5th) were successful. The debut was a success—the beginning of a long history. On the international stage, Otto Eberach of Friedrichshafen, Alberto Annoni of Varese, and Michael Kröger of Hamburg certainly deserve mention, as they won the title multiple times between 1971 and 1984. Today, three Swiss competitors—Marco Signorelli, Renato Buzzi, and Fabrizio Albonico—are among the winners.
2009 – 50th anniversary of the Concorso Idro-modelli event in Lugano, Ticino.
It was an anniversary that couldn’t have gone better. So the event returned once more to the place where it all began, the Foce del Cassarate-Circolo Velico, with the magnificent panorama of Lugano Bay in the background. Three days of beautiful fall weather from September 11–13, 2009—see photos.

2019 – 60 Years
Was it a dream, an illusion? Certainly not. It is a classic like few others—I would say unique in the history of model aviation—here in Switzerland, and perhaps even throughout Europe. A story carried forward by people who firmly believe that the success and tradition—which have endured for years and remain beloved—must not simply disappear. It’s time to express a huge thank you and the respect they deserve to the organizers of the GAL, all the volunteers, pilots, and supporters of this classic event. This fall, Maroggia will celebrate the 60th anniversary of an event that has weathered all storms and challenges, embraced every technical advancement, and yet still thrives—thank you.
