Nothing works without politics
Dear Reader
Progressive model aircraft clubs have existed for a very long time. I clearly remember how, probably 50 years ago, a model aircraft group in the Zurich Oberland maintained contact with local authorities from the very beginning in an exemplary manner. Thanks to the municipality’s role as a mediator, the operation of the airfield was ultimately secured—despite complaints from the neighborhood—subject to a few reasonable conditions. Years later, an official from the neighboring municipality is said to have “strayed” onto the aforementioned grounds. “Do you even have a permit?” was his authoritative question. As the story goes, he didn’t know the boundaries of the municipality that employed him—presumably he wasn’t in the appropriate pay grade... Well, all joking aside; this example shows just how important it has become for us airfield operators to keep the local communities well and consistently informed. Due to the extreme growth of new sports and the influence of large sports clubs—such as soccer clubs—we face even greater challenges than ever before. We contribute to a highly attractive range of recreational activities in the community and region. Through our program, young people gain insight into the fantastic world of aviation, the scientific principles behind wind and weather, knowledge of physics, and technical and hands-on training. Our sport educates and shapes young people without relying on public subsidies. Let’s pass all of this on—and even more—so that we aren’t forgotten amid the scramble and clamor of the big players. Just as every community has soccer fields, we model aviators need a strip of grass (150×50 m) so we can launch and land our models. Let’s hold our politicians accountable. Model aviation needs space! There have been many attempts to block model airfields with petitions; let’s turn the tables and make our sports field a reality with as many signatures as possible. Good luck!
Best regards
